Salvation Army Mentoring Program

A recent collaboration effort between the Somerset County Salvation Army, Harold Shepley & Associates, local banking and community groups, as well as local churches, sought to bring lasting help to hurting people.  In an attempt to go beyond simply helping in the short term with assistance, this group sought a more long term solution.  In October 2011, the Salvation Army began a financial mentoring program to educate people who return to their office for regular assistance. 

Many people receive regular fuel assistance from the Salvation Army.  The new free mentoring program is now a condition for guaranteed future assistance.  Marilyn Trueblood, a certified debt counselor from Harold Shepley & Associates, was an important part of the process in creating the new program.  With her years of experience helping individuals map a course to real financial freedom, Marilyn used her experience to help craft a mentoring program that will truly help people who are hurting and need help.       

This financial mentoring program is part of an initiative to help people become more financially self-sufficient. The area Salvation Army decided to institute this program after seeing so many people bouncing checks at local businesses, and even instances of theft.  At these meetings, clients will be taught how to keep track of their spending and how to best use the resources they have.  After five meetings, a client can decide whether he or she wants to continue.  You can read more about it an article in the Daily American, a Somerset County newspaper.
